Gardening Tips for the Spring Season

Stepping back into the garden after a long, harsh winter can be overwhelming, but it is also a time of relief. Even with a little spring chill still in the air, there are plenty of tasks to start handling now if you want to get your garden in shape by the time the temperatures rise for good!

Evaluate Your Yard

One of the first steps to getting your garden ready for the spring and summer is to take a walk through and make a list of all the areas in your yard that need attention.  Whether that means picking weeds, purchasing new mulch, or taking inventory of any plants and flowers you will need to purchase, it is important to get an idea of your garden before you start planting anything.

Refresh Your Lawn

Spring is an important time to turn your attention to lawn and power tools. Now is the perfect time to send your mower and leaf blower for servicing, or if you have the right tools, sharpen the mower blades yourself. You will want to make sure all of your tools are working properly before you start planting or working on the yard.  You wouldn’t want to pull out your lawnmower for the first time and discover that it doesn’t work!

Fine-tune Your Garden

Clear the lawn of winter debris and look for areas that need reseeding before mowing. Getting a head start on your lawn care is key to having a healthy, green yard this summer!  You will want to weed, prune back plants, and evaluate if some of your plants will grow back this season.

Throw Fresh Mulch

One of the easiest things you can do to make your garden look great is to throw a fresh layer of mulch.   A layer of your favorite mulch, wood chips, straw, even finished compost, gives everything a clean, tidied-up look while helping to suppress weeds and retain moisture. If you aren’t a huge fan of mulch try planting some ground covering like stonecrop or periwinkle for a different look to spruce up your garden.

Plant Container Plants

Planting all of your container plants is a great way to get a head start on your spring landscaping.  These plants are easy to move inside or cover right now when the nights are colder and are typically easier to plant. All you need is your plant, some potting soil, the right sized pot, and water! Most container plants need to be watered once a day when it’s hot.

Warmer days are approaching and a lot of us are eager to get our spring gardens into shape.  Now that there is additional daylight, make sure you take the extra steps to prepare your garden.  From throwing a layer of fresh mulch to composting, there are so many ways to make sure your garden looks extra green this year!
